Oxnard Guerreros Vs Leyendas Liga Mx
November 17, 2018.
It is not often you get the opportunity to see your hometown team face off against the legends you used to envy, but that is exactly what happened Saturday Nov. 17 as your very own Oxnard Guerreros stepped foot on Del Sol Stadium for the first time in their 3rd year of existence.
It was nothing short of an amazing night as the Guerreros took down Leyendas de Liga Mx 6-3 in a match that offered much more than just a game.
The day involved many pregame activities that were able to bring an entire community together in one spot amidst the tragedy that has swallowed California in the past couple of weeks. Those activities included many youth games that allowed the future stars to show off their talent and gave them the opportunity to play on the home pitch of the Guerreros. Also included was bubble soccer, which all in attendance seemed to get a kick out of, but none more than the dunk tank. All those in attendance were offered the opportunity to dunk players, coaches, and even the owner Ty Otto and that is exactly what they did. Ty was dunked not once, but multiple times. Some say he might still be drenched to this day. The day also offered Los Nuevos Activos the chance to play in front of the over 600 people who came out to the event.
The part that all came for was the highly anticipated matchup between Leyendas de Liga Mx and the Guerreros, who were looking to get their year off to a good start.
The match started off with Leyendas on the back foot as Oxnard pressed on and tried to get that first goal.
High pressure from the Guerreros paid off early on in the match as Miguel Lopez was able to find some space in front of the goal and slot the ball into the back of the net to collect his first goal in the green and white. Lopez is new to the team and offers an eye for goal and a passion for the game not matched by many.
“I knew the returning players were going to deliver as expected. Miguel was the one who surprised me and was impressive in his debut” Head Coach Juan Florez said.
It wouldn’t be long until the Guerreros added their second of the night. Miguel Castellanos broke free and buried one past the Leyendas goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
And just when Leyendas thought the attacking force of the Guerreros was about to slow down, Oxnard was awarded a free kick just outside of the box. The ensuing free kick was looped into the back post and Guerreros all time appearance leader Cameron Dejong rose up and was able to head it down past the goalkeeper to make the lead three.
Leyendas looked no match for the Guerreros and Miguel Castellanos was a big reason behind that. Castellanos who scored earlier in the match was hungry for a second and he achieved that feat just a few minutes after Dejong added a third. Castellanos used his expertise in front of the net to free up some space for himself and if Castellanos is given any space he will make you pay, and that’s just what he did, making the score 4-0.
The Guerreros went into the half up 5-0 and the second half would get off to a good start for the opposition.
The 52nd minute brought their first goal making the score line 5-1. The Guerreros came out flat to begin the half and ultimately got punished.
It wouldn’t be long before Leyendas added a second and began to make Guerreros faithful think twice about calling it a game. Juan de Dios Hernandes notched his first goal in the 65th minute and this would open up the game and anything could happen.
Just ten minutes later the Guerreros were back on the attacking end, and seemed to have got their groove back. Long time Guerrero Luis Rivera collected the ball from about 25 yards out. He saw a window of opportunity and he took it blasting the ball into the back of the net to make the score 6-2 and put the nail in the coffin.
In the late stages of the game came another goal for Leyendas, but it was too little too late. The score would be 6-3 and that is how it finished.
“This game means a lot. It allows our guys to get exposure and I also learn a lot by talking to the experienced players.” Florez said.
The Guerreros were able to get their 3rd season off to a good start and they’ll look to continue their winning ways going into the NPSL season.
The Guerreros family would like to thank all those who came out to experience the match and we cannot wait to see you again soon. Somos Guerreros!
