***Match Cancelled due to bad weather***
It has been a long wait, but the return of soccer nights in Oxnard is upon us. Coming March 10th the Guerreros will be hosting the newly created Sporting San Fernando, who ply their trade in the 5th Division United Premier Soccer League. The game will be played at Del Sol Stadium at 6:30 p.m. with tickets costing $5 for Adults and Free Admission for all Kids 12 and Under. This game will be a tune up match for the upcoming NPSL season, one in which the Guerreros will look to improve after finishing the 2017 season in the bottom half of the table.
There will be many familiar faces when the hometown team takes the pitch. The captain Alberto “Tito” Anguiano will be returning for his second season, and he will look to continue his fine form from the inaugural season. Another fan favorite, who will also look to make 2018 his year on the pitch is Emmanuel “Nana” Ayken. Ayken started the 2017 year off with a bang after netting a few goals, but injuries sidelined him multiple times over the course of the year. The Guerreros faithful will be looking at Ayken to start this year just as he started the last. Another key figure in the Guerreros 2017 year was midfielder Luis Rivera. Rivera was invited to the NPSL showcase where the top NPSL players from all four regions compete to get their name out there for clubs at the higher levels of American soccer. Rivera hopes to help this Guerreros team take the next step, and achieve more success in season number two.
There will be familiar faces, but get to know two key new pieces as well. The Orozco cousins, Moises and Emilio, will be playing their first season for the Guerreros. The cousins from Oxnard have both played at the professional level on foreign soil. Moises has seen success at the professional level for Tigres ll in Mexico and Ararat Yerevan in the Armenian professional league. He made 29 appearances for the Armenian club, and managed to get five goals and two assists during his time across the pond.
Emilio Orozco has also played at many professional levels including the MLS, NASL, and USL. He found the most success while in the USL, where he made 54 appearances in his time with the Real Monarchs. Emilio has also made four appearances for the United States at the U20 level. Surely these two additions will lead to more success for the team from Oxnard in the 2018 season.
In addition to the match, this night is filled with fun activities such as raffles, a small field for kids to show off their talent and a Velcro “soccer-bullseye” target challenge with prizes. Be sure to stop and get autographs from the players, who will be representing Oxnard in the upcoming year. Gates open at 6pm Be sure to show up early and bring your Guerreros pride. We look forward to seeing you next weekend, Somos Guerreros!
